Baxi's sister company Heatrae Sadia has won the Environmental and Sustainability category of the Eastern Daily Press Business Awards in recognition of its continued commitment to promoting greener products and practice in the workplace.
The company triumphed due to what was described by the judges as a clear engagement to sustainability and environmental issues. Numerous factors contributed in the company's achievement, including its certification to the ISO 14001:2004 standard - the renowned environmental management system from BSI (British Standards Institution).
In addition, the company won through due to the high level of staff engagement to the environment and to sustainability, which was demonstrated by the managing director and management team through to administrative and manufacturing staff. This includes the appointment of dedicated 'green champions' working across all sectors of the business.
Jonathan Madden, technical director of Heatrae Sadia who accepted the award, said: "As a company we are highly committed to the environment and this philosophy is focused at local, national and international level as we actively lobby governments in the UK and overseas to make sure the highest standards are implemented.
"We don't just wait for legislation to tell us what we should be doing in our working practice and products, we endeavour to keep one step ahead by putting measures in place that would be considered above and beyond our obligations.
"The EDP Awards have become an important event on the calendar in East Anglia and with previous winners including Lotus Cars, Anglian Windows and Sanyo, it is an honour to receive such a prestigious accolade. At Heatrae Sadia we pride ourselves on striving to be as green and efficient as possible so we are delighted that our efforts haven't gone unnoticed by the local business community."
Examples of environmental initiatives at Heatrae Sadia's factory include solar water heating for washrooms reducing energy consumption by around 60 per cent. High tech monitoring equipment in the energy intensive laboratory is used to identify and eliminate areas of waste. The water in the product testing facility is continually recycled and there are recycling waste bins around the factory.
In addition to manufacturing methods and operations, the Megaflo unvented cylinder, Heatrae Sadia's flagship product, is one of the most energy efficient water heating products on the market with more than 1,000,000 installed in homes in the UK.
The newest model, the Megaflo eco, has been designed by the company against stringent objectives to achieve the ultimate in quality and performance and provide the best possible product for the customer. Megaflo eco's green credentials are many; being manufactured from 90 per cent recycled Duplex stainless steel material, it can also work with a wide range of renewable products including solar collectors and air source heat pumps.
The Eastern Daily Press Business Awards, held in association with Anglian Water, were launched in 1990 with the intention of celebrating the achievements of individual companies in the region and to showcase East Anglia's economic strength and depth.
